Winswood Miniature Herefords began when we saw an ad for Mini’s in a Small Farm magazine. We have a hobby farm of 28 acres, a very pretty property overlooking West Gippsland and toward Western Port Bay. We needed something to eat the grass, something that we, novices at handling cattle, could manage, and something nice to look at in the paddock. Very involved in Landcare and with an interest in Sustainable farming, our small property has been laid out with wildlife corridors around all the paddocks and we have created a lovely wetlands for the water birds.
Miniature Herefords was the obvious choice for us. After visiting Tasmania and enjoying the hospitality of Joy and Colin Walters, we placed an order for 2 cows in calf. Leilia and Lola arrived shortly afterwards and so began our venture.
Boomer Creek Mack and Milly came along when the girls were ready for joining – having given us 2 delightful calves – and we made the decision to try showing. This was made easy by our cattle already being very experienced in the show ring and at times I felt grateful that at least one of us knew what we were doing! We have met some terrific people and have increased our network of willing advisors and helpers.
Miniature Herefords are an easy, friendly breed, easily distinguished by their markings, and we have had nothing but pleasure in our involvement with them. We look forward to breeding animals that others on small properties can enjoy too and will have steers for sale in the autumn.
